Christ in Gethsemane 1878
Vasily Perov (Russian, 1834-1882)

Agony in the Garden
“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me:
nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.”
Luke 22:42

Let your eyes sweep over the painting. Notice the light, the dark, the details of the background and the colours used. What caught your attention? Why was your attention drawn to this?

The artist chose to paint Jesus with His face on the ground. Take a closer look. What could have been going on in Jesus’ heart as he prayed facedown to His Father?

What do you want to say to Jesus as he prays in the Garden?

What does God want to say to you?

The Kiss of Judas c. 1304-06
Giotto di Bondone (Italian, 1267-1337)

Betrayed with a Kiss
“Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
Luke 22:84

Imagine you are a bystander watching this scene of betrayal unfold before you. Where would you place yourself? From that place, what are you hearing, seeing, and feeling as you watch the events happening?

Look at Jesus and Judas. Hear the words spoken by Jesus to Judas, his friend and betrayer, “My friend, go ahead and do what you have come for.” How do you feel looking at the image? What stirs in you?

Offer whatever comes up for you in prayer to God.

Note: In the culture of first-century Israel, a kiss on the cheek was a common greeting, a sign of deep respect, honour, and brotherly love. (see Luke 7:45; Romans 16:16)

The Flagellation of Our Lord Jesus Christ 1880
William Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825-1905)

Tortured and Flogged
Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.
Luke 22:63

Gaze upon this picture. What do you notice?

How does it feel to know that Christ walked this path for you, to pay for our sins? Why do you feel this way?

What is Jesus saying to you about Himself? How does it feel to have this kind of God?

The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

Imagine yourself in this scene. What are you feeling and thinking as you hear the crowd shout “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”

Pilate chose to please the crowd instead of taking a stand to do the right thing. How do you react to it? Respond to what you sense God is saying or inviting you to in prayer.

Look over these three pieces. Which one tugs at your heart? Focus on that picture to reflect further.

Peter & John
Look deeper into Peter and John’s face as they race to the tomb.

Jesus’ body is missing, that’s what Mary said.

What do you think is on their mind?

Peter and John raced to the tomb. Is there somewhere you are running to? Where are your energies committed to?

Mary Magdalene
Imagine you are Mary at the scene.

Pause and reflect as you listen to the man call your name, “Mary”. You recognise His voice – it is Jesus of Nazareth! What do you feel and what thoughts run through you?

Thomas
As you enter the scene as Thomas, put your finger in Jesus’ wound.

What runs through you?

What does it mean to you that Jesus returned looking for you, Thomas?

“Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
