The devotional’s title, “Our Best Thought” is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.” Receive direct updates through a Telegram Channel: https://t.me/ourbestthought

Scripture:

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”
Matthew 13:44 (NIV)

Parables are stories made easier to understand with a powerful spiritual lesson.

Most of us are familiar with the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The ending of the parable always invokes in our hearts—“Would we do what the Good Samaritan did?” The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Builder does the same—“Would I choose to be a wise builder or remain a foolish one?”

Observation:

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure is the shortest parable with just one verse. At first glance, the meaning is obvious, that the kingdom of heaven is worth trading for everything a person owns, in order to “possess” it. This message is further elaborated in the Parable of the Pearl found in the ensuing two verses, 45 – 46, which reads.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”
Matthew 13:45-46 (NIV)

However, on further reading and examination, it stood out to me that the “treasure” may also represent the people of the kingdom, while the “man” denotes Jesus. The “field” means the world.

We were bought with the price of His blood on the Cross. This lines up with the man selling everything to buy the field. Jesus “sold” it all or gave His life to purchase us.

I see now the parable (Matthew 13:44) in this light,

The kingdom of heaven is like people of the kingdom in the world. When Jesus found it, He hid it again, and then in His joy went and gave His life and buys the world.

Application:

Utmost thanks, Jesus for Your sacrificial love in purchasing us whom You deem as a treasure of priceless worth!

From these parables we can see that we are God’s treasure of immense value. This shows His heart and great love for us. We are even called the apple of His eye (Psalms 17:8). This conveys to me that God loves me so much, His treasure, that He gave His One and Only Son, that I who believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Response:

O God, thank You from the bottom of my heart, that You can love one such as I. For indeed this is true, for You say I am your treasure. If I ever allow to doubt Your love, please forgive me. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for Your amazing love towards me. Strengthen me to never let down such sacrificial love.
In Your Precious Name.
Amen.

Pr Tan Moy How is Pastor of District 1 and Lead Pastor for DUMC@Puchong.
