The devotional’s title, “Our Best Thought” is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.” Receive direct updates through a Telegram Channel: https://t.me/ourbestthought

Scripture:

“Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

“Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”

The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”

“Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.”

The man took Jesus at his word and departed. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.”

Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.”

John 4:46-53 (NIV)

Observation:

In this story, the royal official was desperate and begged Jesus to go with him to see his son. However, Jesus did not go but declared that his son would be healed.

After the long journey to see Jesus, it could have been discouraging and frustrating for him to accept His Words only and to continue to trust Him then. But when he finally went home holding on to the Word of Jesus, that was when his son was healed. The words of Jesus were fulfilled.

Application:

We can’t expect God to work in exactly the way that we want because He has His own way and His timing. Instead of setting a specific way for God to answer our prayers, we need to keep trusting Him, holding on to His words.

There have been many times in my life where I expected God to work in particular ways. When things did not turn out the way I wanted, it felt difficult to obey Him. There were times I found myself disappointed, and even doubting God.

I am reminded here that it is God who determines how things will happen, not I. I do not need to worry about the process but just obey and trust Him because God will keep His word.

As I start obeying, just like this royal official who started his journey back, God is already moving and working in my life.

Response:

Lord, forgive me for the times when I did not fully obey You and trust in Your ways. Who am I to decide the way for You? You are faithful and You never shortchange me. May I fully trust and obey You no matter where you lead me in my journey. Amen.

Yukiko Tan is a Zone Leader with PJ North 6, and also serves with Resonate.
