The devotional’s title, “Our Best Thought” is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.” Publishes on Sundays.

Scripture:

So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.

Deuteronomy 5:32-33 (NIV)

Observation:

In the 40-year journey towards the Promised Land, God made Israel into a nation by the giving of the Law of Moses, urging them to be careful and to heed His commandments. However, the Israelites were a grumbling lot who would craft their own idols and indulge in the pleasure of lives that were displeasing to God. Repeatedly, they forgot about God’s provision and protection over their lives. Unrepentant and rebellious, all but two from a generation of Israelites were wiped out. Defiant of God’s instructions, even their leaders Moses and Aaron died before stepping foot onto the Promised Land.

Yet, God remained a faithful promise-keeper and the next generation of Israelites finally entered the land that He had promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Application:

This passage of Scripture stood out to me like a red beacon, as the world is filled with influences of temptation and pressure. The call is that I should remain focused on God, and to walk closely with Him; that I can be sure of His will and make better decisions in life.

Recently, I had to make a choice that would affect the second half of my 2021. Time and time again, God has proven faithful and true to His promises when I have been obedient to His leading. So, I asked for His affirmation about the decision that I was set to make. He answered through my friends, bible verses that I came across in my reading, lyrics of worship songs, and a reminder of why I opted to study part-time.

I look towards the years ahead of me. Though I do not know exactly where my destinations are, I am content, knowing that God will see me through all of it. In Him, there is prosperity, laden with hope and joy; lavished with love and grace. What more can I ask for?

Response/Prayer:

Father, forgive me for the times when I took You and your Word for granted. Your commandments are of value today, as much as your promises and covenants were in the olden days. How can I demand of just the good from you, without me making the choice to walk right and in obedience to your calling and will in my life? Thank you Father, for your outpouring of love, comfort, grace and mercy. May I never sway nor lose sight of you. May I continue to walk with you and dwell in your house. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wendy ML Tan is a Cell Leader with PJ South 1 and serves on Ignite and the First Touch ministries.

Our Best Thought is a weekly devotional that follows DUMC’s Bible Reading Plan.
