The devotional’s title, “Our Best Thought” is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.” Publishes on Sundays.

Scriptures:

Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. Previously, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and in. And the Lord said to you, ‘You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be a leader over Israel.’” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them before the Lord in Hebron; then they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned for thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.

2 Samuel 5:1-5

Observation:

After King Saul died, it took more than 7 years for the whole nation of Israel to accept David and anoint him as King. The transition of leadership for David to take the throne didn’t go smoothly as it involved a lot of political factors and strategy. It was a complex situation but never too hard for God, as we see the culmination of these long years in the passage above.

David didn’t rely on his intelligence and knowledge to take hold of the throne. Rather, he put his trust in the Lord. He didn’t take matters into his own hands, and often spent time inquiring of the LORD. He was a man of faith who sought God’s heart and desired to please Him, such as in this incidence:

In the course of time, David inquired of the Lord. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.

The Lord said, “Go up.”

David asked, “Where shall I go?”

“To Hebron,” the Lord answered.

2 Samuel 2:1

He did not rush through things, but waited for the Lord and trusted in God’s timing. David’s life has reflected God’s faithfulness to His people and he has proved to be a good shepherd for God’s people during his time.

Application:

God is patient and faithful to us. He doesn’t get annoyed when His people eagerly draw close to Him.

Like many other godly people in the Bible, David always inquired of God in many matters. God never push them away and is delighted to meet with them.

As James 4:8 affirmed that and said “Come near to God and he will come near to you.”

Drawing close to God reveals areas of life that we need to deal with. It may be sins, unresolved conflicts or other challenges and issues of life that we try to hide away. May the fear of the Lord humble us to surrender to Him and seek His will to overcome those issues.

Response:

My dear Father in heaven, I desire to draw closer to you and learn to trust in your perfect timing.

Help me to be more patient and learn to wait on You. Although sometimes I find it challenging to seek solutions from your word in a different difficult situation faced in the present time. But I want to keep seeking You like David and learn from the Holy Spirit to know how you will lead me through. Keep me near with You Lord I pray in Jesus name. Amen.

Jerry Teo is Coordinator of Street Ministry.

Our Best Thought is a weekly devotional that follows DUMC’s Bible Reading Plan.
