We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

Acts 6:2-4 (NIV)

Observation:

In Acts 6, we see that the growth of the church was increasing so rapidly that the needs of the Hellenists (Greek-speaking Jews) were not being met, possibly because of the language barrier. The apostles recognised the problem that while there is a need to be met, they themselves could not be the ones to meet them, as they were already responsible to devote themselves to prayer and the preaching of the word. They called upon the congregation to pick seven men among themselves that possessed a set of specific criteria to be appointed to care for the needs of these widows.

Application:
In this week’s lessons on leadership, the apostles show us that while the needs are great, good leaders need to learn to delegate with wisdom. There are certain things we must do on our own and there are some we can delegate to others. As leaders, we are not called to do everything on our own. It is important that we learn the art of delegation by raising up leaders to serve in other ways. And in raising leaders, we too need to be careful that we choose these ones carefully, with much wisdom, and they are to be the right people for the specific role.

I love this quote from Carey Nieuwhof:

What we accomplish in leadership is often most powerfully shaped by who we allow into leadership.

People should never be put into a position in which they are ill-prepared. As leaders it is our role to choose wisely.

Response:
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me for such a time as this to lead in the capacity that You have entrusted to me. As I serve, keep me humble so that I will never once think that I can do all on my own. Help me to be on the lookout for opportunities to build others in their leadership as I learn to delegate well and choose the right people with much wisdom, so that they too can play a part in expanding Your Kingdom here on earth.
