An astronomer and her professor find a huge asteroid heading for earth. The impact of this asteroid will end all life on earth. They do everything they can to “tell the world” of their finding. They manage to meet a very flamboyant President of the United States who merely shuns off the advice until it is too late.
When telling the President does not yield the results they want, they decided to announce their message to the world via television during a famous morning talk show, and through the internet. The world in turn, starts to ridicule them and this causes an uproar of internet trolls and supporters. They end up being a laughing stock but they do not give up preaching that the world will end. The upside is that they got more famous and their message eventually reaches the world. Many scientists around the world begin to notice the same asteroid and concern grows all over the world. The world now convenes to discuss this matter.
To make things worse, when the President realizes her error, instead of getting the world ready for extraction in spaceships, she heeds the advice of a wealthy businessman who convinces her that “everything is going to be okay”. He invents a rocket to blow the asteroid to smaller pieces and eventually deflects the trajectory of the asteroid to cause very minimal damage to earth. The astronomers though famous do not give up and continue their message to the very end.
The movie “Don’t Look Up” was an eye opener for me. An asteroid was going to hit earth; people saw it right in front of their eyes yet no one had fear. They were so comfortable with their lives to the point that the end of the world did not cause any panic. They chose to listen to the wrong people even when the facts have been laid right in front of their very eyes. This movie reminded me of my attitude in dealing with the Fear of God and of the End Times.
Nobody is scared anymore. Is the fear of God important? Yes it is. It better be because whether we like it or not, two absolute truths remain. One, our lives and the lives of our loved ones and every human life will come to an end. Secondly, Jesus will come again. Which scares you more? God has sent so many people to remind us again and again but people don’t seem to understand the message nor the severity that comes from the lack of understanding the fear of God. We tend to justify and compromise our own beliefs instead. We should focus on this God who came as Jesus to die for our sins and offer us salvation. He loves us so much and forgives us from all our sins to gain eternal life.
We must also factor in the fear of God before we factor in His love for us. The fear and reverence of His power will eventually lead us to understand His jealous love for us and the extent He was willing to go through to achieve this high moral standard. The same God who forgives is the same God who will judge us for our rewards when the time comes. Let us come together and thank God and revere Him even during this Chinese New Year festival.
