WHY THIS PROGRAMME MATTERS
In every church, people carry grief, anxiety, relational struggles, and hidden wounds. Often, the first person they turn to is not a professional but someone within the church.
Yet effective pastoral care requires more than good intentions.
It requires self-awareness, active listening, spiritual maturity, and ethical discernment.
A JOURNEY OF EQUIPPING
This is a 3-part series equipping journey to form:
- Competent helpers
- Compassionate listeners
- Spiritually grounded individuals
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
Each series includes:
- 1 intensive seminar with Dr Tan Siang Yang (10 hours)
- 5 follow-up classes with AOIC counselling team (3 hours each)
Total: 25 hours per series, 75 hours across 3 series.
SERIES 1 (2026) —
The Heart of the Helper
Emotional and Spiritual Health
Focus: Self-awareness and personal formation
Outcome: Grounded helpers who understand themselves
SERIES 2 (2027) —
Understanding Life Struggles
Focus: Mental health and relational challenges
Outcome: Equipped helpers who walk alongside others
SERIES 3 (2028) —
Advanced Care and Discernment
Focus: Complex issues and ethical decision-making
Outcome: Mature helpers ready for ministry

ACADEMIC CREDIT
For participants pursuing academic credit through AOIC, each series’ content can be structured as a three-credit seminary course. The total series are designed as three courses to meet accreditation standards for counselling and pastoral care education and may apply toward diploma or degree programmes.
IMPORTANT
This programme is not a professional counselling certification.
It is a formation pathway for lay ministry.

Dr Tan Siang Yang

Siang Yang (PhD, Clinical Psychology, McGill University) is a Senior Professor of Clinical Psychology at the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy, Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, USA, and Senior Pastor Emeritus, of First Evangelical Church, Glendale, California, USA. He has published numerous articles and 17 books, including Counselling and Psychotherapy: A Christian Perspective; A Christian Approach to Counselling and Psychotherapy; Lay Counselling (with Eric Scalise); and Shepherding God’s People: A Guide to Faithful and Fruitful Pastoral Ministry. He now serves as Spiritual Director of the American Association of Christian Counsellors.
