DUMC STORIES: WEI JIAN

Sent by Wei Jian • Dec 3, 2023

Hi everyone, I am Wei Jian. I am currently working at DUMC, helping to manage and support the Boys’ Brigade Ministry. I came from a Buddhist family, and through the grace of God and his wonderful intervention into my life, I came to know who God is when he provided me with a sense of peace after years of fear and distraught (a story for another time).

In the past year, as I serve in the 12th Kuala Lumpur Boys’ Brigade Company, I have had to take on the responsibility of doing our Word sessions as well as leading the devotion time with the members. In the past (despite being a Christian for almost 10 years), this was something I was always fearful and cautious about, as I was always worried as to whether what I was sharing was relevant and, most importantly, the right thing.

During those first few times, I remember asking for help to review my slides and sharing them with many people to make sure that I was not misleading the members. However, as time went on, this came more naturally as I prayed for guidance and trusted the Holy Spirit when a very specific topic came to mind that was relevant.

Recently, we underwent a devotional series where we reviewed the fundamentals of being Christians, and in doing so, we came back to understanding and realising who Jesus is in our lives. In taking the lead in these sessions, I was able to build more confidence in sharing the Word of God with the members and can do so more efficiently as I myself was reminded about those particular lessons.

However, what I did not expect was how wonderful and miraculous God’s hand was when, one week after the completion of a series, I received a call from a dear friend of mine for a random catch-up. During the catch-up, the Spirit of God let us into a conversation about how he was struggling with his faith, and somehow, I realised that God had put me through all those sessions just so that I could help this friend of mine rediscover his wonders. We ended up spending hours going through various discussions and praying for each other (something we have not done for each other before, despite us both being Christians).

Just a week before writing this, I was again able to share this testimony with another friend of mine, and despite all the challenges he had faced with people sharing God with him previously, he was listening and asking questions about it.

What this reminded me was that God can use me in the most random of ways, but everything happens according to his plan. It was truly refreshing to be able to talk about God and our respective challenges in our faith, but what was amazing was how God timed everything.

I am not perfect, nor am I someone who is as diligent as I should be studying the Word of God, and I certainly wasn’t one who would just previously openly talk about God to others. But what this experience has taught me is that God can use me to reach out to anyone at anytime, not just in the Boys’ Brigade but also those who are in my personal life, and so I am reminded about the importance of wearing and maintaining the Armour of God (Ephesians 6:10–20).

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
