Looking back on 39 years of marriage, I thank God for His presence with my husband and I through good, bad and challenging times. I remember the decision to marry my husband as God had shown me his good heart and also revealed the struggles he had during the early years of his life. God had always protected him due to his mother’s consistent prayer. I was a non-believer then but a good friend who is a sister-in-Christ had also advised me that if I want to build a lasting marriage, I need to be equally yoked with my spouse. That had me taking the first step to becoming a Christian. I had asked my husband then that I would like our marriage to be blessed in church and was told in order to do that, I needed to accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. So I went to classes to get to know about Christianity and be baptised.
I started with the blessing of our marriage, which then revealed many struggles which my husband was going through, but the Word of God was always there to guide and strengthen me during bad and challenging times. I grew in faith as I experienced the touch of the Lord who gave me strength and wisdom. He provided for our needs and also enabled my husband’s faith to be renewed during the early years as I had stood on His Word and promises I made in our marriage vows. I learned to be wise as a serpent and gentle as a dove in various situations that arose. I stood firm in faith believing that God who blessed our marriage will see us through the difficult times and I can testify that His love has sealed our marriage and we have survived 39 years. His love has been with us as we carry on keeping our faith in Him.
I know that everything happens for Him to strengthen and renew our faith in Him. We live now to share our experiences with young couples in our CG. We know our calling is to the younger families but at times, we do take a step back as we do not wish to appear assertive in our advice. We continue to pray that the Lord will open their minds to see the Truth we want to share with them.
May the Lord continue to guide us as we serve Him wherever He places us.
