DUMC STORIES: YEW YI

After the passing of my dad last year, our family grew closer, and we made the decision to go on a family trip to our mom’s hometown. As the trip approached, I couldn’t help but worry about my financial situation. However, I knew how important this trip was to my mom. I prayed about it, and my wife understood my struggle. She reminded me of how God has always provided for our family in the past. Though we knew God, it was in times like these that our faith was truly tested.

I mustered the courage to search for flight tickets, keeping in mind the well-being of my wife and our little one. However, budget constraints made it difficult to find suitable options.

One evening, as I prayed, I asked the Lord about the trip. I felt God impress upon my heart, asking, “How would you plan if money wasn’t an issue?” Encouraged by this thought, I decided to check flight prices the following day.

To my surprise, the next morning I received a call from a bank that I hadn’t used in over 10 years. They informed me that there was money left in my account, which would become dormant and subject to annual charges. My initial reaction was suspicion. I thought it must be a scam. Why would a bank chase me to move my money elsewhere? I probed the caller further, asking how much was in the account. She told me it was confidential, but it was approximately a few thousand. I still found it hard to believe, but despite my doubts, I agreed to visit the bank.

Yet, something in my heart felt uneasy. I considered reporting the number to the bank as a scam and decided to call the bank to verify. To my amazement, it was not a scam. I had indeed forgotten about the money in that account! Hallelujah! When I checked the amount, it covered a significant portion of our expenses.

Encouraged by this unexpected provision, we continued to seek the Lord’s guidance. He impressed upon my wife and me to consider taking a flight from Kuala Lumpur to my mom’s hometown and returning home with my mom. We also had preferred airlines in mind, but assumed they would be expensive. However, to our surprise, the ticket prices were at least 35% cheaper, and the cost aligned exactly with the amount I had left in my bank account.

Even during the trip itself, we encountered God’s presence numerous times through interactions with people and in the process of renting a car. It was an amazing experience when we chose to do things with God rather than relying solely on ourselves. The gospel we believe in is a gospel of power.

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18)
