Sermon Reflection: The Family We Fight For

Contributed by Michelle Chuah • Jul 7, 2026

Looking back in my life I am so thankful for the many experiences that I have been through as the Holy Spirit continually worked in my life as a young Christian then. Many times I had struggled with dying to my self pride as I worked under higher authorities which suppressed my chances of career advancement. At the end of the humbling experiences I realised that all that had happened had enabled me to release unresolved bitterness unto Him by forgiving them. That had enabled me to have peace in my heart as the bitter feelings had been removed from my heart.

Similarly, when I had grown in maturity through discipleship in CG by reading the book ‘Lord, Change Me’, I realised that it is I who need to see things from Jesus’ perspective and not through my own thoughts. I had learned to seek His Word and respect others’ decisions which are different from mine, especially early in marriage when I was staying together with my parents-in-law. I had stayed with them for seven years, struggling with many issues yet we had remained as a family supporting each other during challenging times.

Yet a different season in life started when we moved to stay on our own. I am very thankful that I had a secure job as a teacher which had provided monthly income as my husband ‘s income is inconsistent. I had learnt to respect his decisions as the head of the family (1 Corinthians 11:3) as he had decided to buy our present house with a huge loan. With fear and trembling I turned to the Lord and prayed that all will be well as I trust Him for providence for the house loan. I had learnt not to fight him but to pray alongside him for God’s provision. I remembered that if two or more gather together and pray, seeking Him, He will hear our prayer. By His grace and mercy, He has provided all that we need until today. We continue to trust the Lord even though at times we make mistakes in our decisions. He is faithful and forgiving as our heavenly Father and will always be with us if we continually seek Him daily.
