Sermon Reflection: Live a Good Life

Contributed by Michelle Chuah • Sep 19, 2023

Born just two years after Malaya received independence from the British government, I have lived all my life in Malaysia, believing in the succession of leaderships that God has allowed to rule the country. Yet, many times I have been sadly disappointed by the affirmative actions taken that do not allow for equal public education opportunities (among others) in life.

Being born into a single-income family who works in the government service, I was unable to further my education as there were four younger siblings who also needed basic education. My family were non-Christians although there were Christian relatives on my father’s side of the family. God in His grace and mercy had opened doors for me to work in a government department when the government had implemented a programme called “Operasi Isi Penuh” which allows all Malaysians to apply for various job opportunities. It was through this job that I had stepped out of my family home and learned to live independently.

It was also this time that I had come to know Christian colleagues who helped me get on my feet whenever I stumble or face problems at work. By their care and concern for me I came to see Christians in a different light as compared to my schooling days where I kept to myself due to a very conservative upbringing. It was also through the love and care of a Christian colleague that I had seen the love of Christ. I was given a Gideons Bible and this encouraged me to read the Scriptures whenever I feel troubled. I have been greatly blessed by this little New Testament Bible which comforted and encouraged me during challenging times.

Now after knowing Christ for almost four decades I am still in touch with this sister-in-Christ. By journeying with her, I have been able to grow in the Lord through the many trials and challenges, alongside with my husband, children and an ageing mother-in-law. I am glad that I took the step to follow Jesus and have the support of sisters-in-Christ in DUMC besides a loving husband and children.

May the Lord continue to guide me and use me to encourage others through the  sharing of my life’s experiences.
