DUMC STORIES: JEE KEONG

It was supposed to be a vacation in Kuala Lumpur for my wife and me, but it turned into an emergency delivery. My daughter was born prematurely at 29 weeks of gestation, weighing only 880g. We had initially planned for her delivery to take place in Singapore.

The journey was filled with ups and downs, involving a total of 214 days of travelling back and forth to the hospital. My daughter underwent three major operations (one heart surgery and two laryngeal surgeries) just to ensure she could breathe properly. I was mentally prepared for her to return home to Singapore with oxygen support after being told multiple times by the doctor that we needed a proper plan to transport her from KL to SG, taking into account customs clearance and the oxygen equipment.

It would be untrue to say that the journey wasn’t long and exhausting. The constant travel between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, combined with the struggle of balancing work and mental pressure, was overwhelming. I had been disconnected from Christianity for over 10 years. During this crisis, I realised that our heavenly Father could lift the burden off my shoulders. I felt helpless and clueless about what to do next as a new parent of a premature baby. No one could advise me on what steps to take. Something within me urged me to seek Him for help, so I began praying and talking to Him again after so long.

The first day I attended DUMC with my aunt, Lena Ling, who worships there, I met Uncle See Toh and Aunty Kim. They accompanied us throughout this journey, constantly checking on us and offering their endless prayers. Through them, we got to know Pastor Angeline, Pastor Chris, Pastor Benny, Pastor Daniel Ho, Elder Ann, Aunty Doris, and many others who also prayed tirelessly for my daughter. From them, I learned how to pray properly to our heavenly Father. I told Him that I was exhausted from the endless updates from the doctor and not knowing when my daughter could come home. I was desperate for His miracles and breakthroughs.

“At the right time, I, the LORD, will make it happen” (Isaiah 60:22). Although it took 214 days, by His will and timing, my daughter miraculously weaned off the oxygen supply and began breathing on her own. She was finally discharged from the hospital. I am so thankful for the Lord’s perfect plan from day one to day 214. Even when we don’t see it, He is always working to prosper us. All glory belongs to Him. Praise the Lord for my miracle child. Amen!
