DUMC STORIES: SOK MIN

Sent by Sok Min • Mar 5, 2022

My grandma turned 90 years old in 2021. She had maintained good health over the last decade except for occasional dizzy spells and high blood pressure. She had one tooth left and had difficulty eating. As a devout Christian, she prayed before every meal. In April 2021, she had a dentist appointment for a swollen gum, followed by uncontrollable trembling, which was suspected to be early-stage Parkinson’s. On 29 April, she could not sit or stand upright, making the family concerned. Later that evening, she lost control of her hand and oral functions due to non-stop trembling. On 30 April, she was sent to the emergency department for geriatric treatment. After a seven-hour wait, she was admitted to the hospital, where she was found to be Covid positive on the second day of her stay.

Given her age and condition, the hospital advised that one family member be her carer during her stay in the Covid ward. I volunteered for the role, knowing that with the shortage of frontliners, one could not expect good care at the hospital. Her condition was not good; she had low BP and growing regularity in her coughing. For days, she could only take in a few sips of Milo with formula milk as she had difficulty swallowing or sipping from a straw.

Her condition remained the same, with her health deteriorating day by day. Her constant trembling and hard coughing meant that an hour of good rest/sleep was a luxury for us. On the sixth day of my grandma’s hospitalization, the doctors told us that her condition was deteriorating and that she might need to be admitted to the ICU soon. They warned us to prepare for the worst-case scenario, as her heart or internal organs might fail anytime. Although this news was scary, I knew that God was with us, and I felt a sense of peace. Both Christian, and non-Christian family members and CG members prayed individually at home and on video calls.

On the eighth day, I suddenly woke up at 5:45 am for no reason and saw my grandma slowly lifting her hands upwards into the air. I quickly got up to hold her hand, checking if she was cold or needed help. While holding her hand, she excitedly said, “I quickly woke up to tell you, I dreamed of Jesus. Jesus gave me a Bible. I told Jesus that the Bible is no use for me since I can’t read or write, so I said, ‘Jesus, why not you give me gold?’ Before I woke up, Jesus said, ‘DON’T WORRY.’ And that’s when she woke up, at the same moment that I did. Both of us were shivering with excitement as we held hands, and I jokingly asked her, “Did Jesus know how to speak Hakka with you?” She smiled and started coughing hard again until she fell asleep around 6 am. It was the first time she smiled since I came to the hospital. I was overjoyed and quickly shared the incident with our family group chat.

On the tenth day, two doctors visited us at different times and listened to my grandma’s lungs. They found that the noise had reduced significantly, which explained the amazing result of the blood test taken that morning. Her CRP result was 39.4/5 mg/L, which was 7.88 times above the normal reference benchmark, but a 50% improvement compared to her report on the seventh day. (The CRP: C-reactive protein test is used to measure a Covid patient’s responsiveness to treatment) On day 18, grandma was finally discharged from the hospital.

In addition to that, COVID became our blessing in disguise, God has healed my grandma from:
1. A decade of High BP
2. More than a decade of unknown cause of constant dizziness
3. Losing motor control (started in 2021)

Hallelujah for God’s Mercy, and unfailing Love!!!
