DUMC STORIES: WENDY TAN

Posted by • Aug 24, 2020

During the Movement Control Order / MCO, I had to work from home. I was transferred to a new division last October. I was not close to my colleagues and I did not understand a lot of things. While many people enjoyed the extra time at home with their family, I was getting stressed out and depressed. I would often lock myself in my bedroom and cry. Reading the bible and listening to worship songs did not help me. I felt very far away from God. My mother and I would argue about little things. Nothing seemed right.

One night, I decided to listen to an overseas live preaching. The pastor talked about Jesus, who is the bread of life. The sermon reminded me that God is present and close to me. I only need to reach out to Him, and He can make things new again in my life.

Then, in May, I started to go back to the office. I have been working in MPH for 19 years, but because of the MCO, the company lost a lot of income. Many bookstore outlets had to be closed, and the company decided to downsize. I was one of the staff who was let go. My last day with the company was 31 July.

When I found out about the news, I was at first, shocked. I turned to God immediately and I felt a sense of peace in my heart. Many times before, when I did not have a close walk with God, I would sometimes wonder if God would even care about me. But, in recent years. I have learned to build my trust and faith in God. So, I told Him that my life is in His hands, and that if it was in His will, then I know that l will get through this season.

Jeremiah 29:11 says: For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Many people asked me what I would do after I leave the company. I have thought about furthering my studies – at a bible school. None of my friends or relatives objected to my plans. While I lose my job, the company has to give me some compensation. Some of the money can be used to pay for my studies. I truly believe that if our hearts are right, and that we have good intentions, God will provide. He has given me not just money to study, but also a lot of good friends and opportunities in life.

I would like to encourage you by saying that God loves all of us. We are never out of His sight. He knows when we are going through hard times. It might seem to us that things are so tough, but hold on to God, and continue to trust in Him. He has a way out for us, He has plans for our future.

I know He is starting a new chapter of my life, for me.
