Our Best Thought

Seeing Beyond the Pain (Genesis 40)

Feb 16, 2025

The 2025 edition of Our Best Thought is inspired by our 2025 Bible Reading Plan and features writings thoughtfully crafted by contributors reflecting on their daily devotions. Our Best Thought is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.”

Reading: Genesis 45

Scripture:

Genesis 45:5

And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.

Observation:

When faced with hardship, we can look at it in different ways. Joseph could have seen his brothers’ betrayal as something to hold against them. He could have chosen anger, bitterness, or even revenge. But instead, he saw God’s bigger plan—how He used everything, even the painful moments, to save lives. Joseph’s story reminds us that our struggles are not just about what happens to us, but about what God is doing through them.

Application:

Like Joseph, we have a choice in how we see difficult situations. Do we focus on the hurt, or do we trust that God is working for good? When we shift our perspective, we begin to see how even the hardest moments can be part of His greater plan. Instead of holding onto resentment, we can choose forgiveness. Instead of staying stuck in pain, we can move forward in faith. Are there past hurts we need to let go of? How can we trust God’s purpose in our lives today?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help us to see things through Your eyes. When we face challenges, remind us that You are always at work. Teach us to let go of bitterness and trust in Your greater plan. Give us hearts that forgive and faith that moves forward, just as Joseph did. Amen.
