The 2024 edition of Our Best Thought is inspired by our 2024 Bible Reading Plan and features writings thoughtfully crafted by contributors reflecting on their daily devotions. “Our Best Thought“ is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.”
Reading: Jeremiah 10
Scripture:
Jeremiah 10:16
“He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these,
for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel,
the people of his inheritance—
the Lord Almighty is his name.”
ㅤ
Observation:
This chapter starts with Jeremiah’s exhortation to “hear what the Lord says”. The Israelites had strayed in their beliefs and convictions as to who the true God was. Idols filled their landscape and Jeremiah’s heart bled for their naivety and gullibility. He reminds them that God is the “Maker of all things”.
ㅤ
Application:
Jeremiah’s reminder to the Israelites is as much needed by us today as it was to them. Idols fashioned by human hands will never be able to meet our needs. In today’s environment, idols can come in the form of self-belief, fame, the number of subscribers or likes … and the ever increasing list in “chasing after the wind”. Our focus and hope ought to be on God – the Maker of all things. The one who worships God is well girded to face life’s storms as opposed to the one who worships a worthless, man-made substitute.

Prayer:
Dear God, You are our Maker. When You thought of us in the secret place, You had the perfect design for each of us. Help us to remember that, so that our eyes will be focussed squarely on You. Keep our hearts steadfast by obeying Your word for Your Name’s sake. Amen.
