Sermon Reflection: Activate Your Faith

Contributed by Adeline Ting • Jan 21, 2025

“What is that in your hand?” As I pondered on this, it felt like I could almost hear God saying this. Not that I’m Moses or that I have Moses’s staff, but, let me share my story.

Many years ago, while seeking the different ministries to serve, I struggled with finding the right ministry. I had 101 reasons, excuses and questions that formed a formidable mental block that prevented me from stepping out of my comfort zone. Serving means commitment, and I feared to let go of my time. Anyhow, sans the long story, I ended up serving in a small, unassuming ministry-the writing ministry. I was on tenterhooks when my first piece was shared. Did I write it adequately, capturing all that the Pastor has delivered? Did I embarrass myself by wearing my heart on my sleeve as I pen the Sermon Reflection? Was I too technical in my writing here compared to my typical science articles? What if what I wrote is rejected by those who read it? Honestly, I did not expect that I would feel this vulnerable over a piece of Engage document!

But God is good. As I ready myself to write on my scheduled weekends, somehow and somewhat, the sermon speaks to me, every time. It is as if God delivered a personal message to me, imbued in the sermons I am meant to summarize. The messages are clear, and they guide me in my decision making, strengthen my faith, remind me that He is the Creator, at times they rebuke me, but very often, they inspire and uplift my spirit when I am down. It is as if God knew what I was going through at the exact moment and is telling me “I see you, I hear you, I am here for you”. This activates my faith over and over again.

Hence, after many years, I am still writing. I feel less vulnerable now, no longer fearful, for I tell myself that I write for God. I write in the hope to sow seeds that may be ready for harvest by others. I write because, in my humble personal capacity, I am able to touch others in love and gratitude.

So, “What is that in your hand?”

A simple pen that carries my thoughts and expressions of the love of our great Lord.
