Sermon Reflection: Digital Frontier – Unlocking The Great Commission Opportunities

Contributed by Abbey Thangiah • Jun 6, 2023

I have been privileged to be in DUMC since 1999. It is a blessing to see the church grow, its passion for mission and also keeping up with technology. DUMC is one of the earliest churches in Malaysia to go online live. This has certainly been a blessing  to me since I used to work outstation. This has also allowed me to serve in the writing ministry for many years. There are moments where I have written the sermon summary while I was in Penang, Melaka, Johor and even once in Vietnam.

Having our church on a digital platform allows me to just send links to my friends. During one of the weekends. DUMC had invited Mr. Mun Toh to preach.  He preached a beautiful message on caring for our parents and the Golden Club and the senior community at large. Mun Toh happened to be my comedy mentor. It is because of him that I am in comedy. DUMC being digital allowed me to just copy and send the link to all my comedy friends in KL, Christians and non-Christians alike. All my friends were able to watch him preach in the comfort of their own homes. It allowed me to also introduce the church in a very simple manner.

During the pandemic SIBKL started a prayer session on Zoom where there was continuous prayer for about 2 months. It was beautiful seeing all tribes and tongues come together to worship and pray. When I log online, I can feel the power of the Holy Spirit.

Elder Wan Kuan was the organiser of probably the biggest Orang Asli gathering in Bentong. Every indigenous tribe in Malaysia was there. Every part of this conference was nothing short of a miracle, from getting the approval to gathering all the tribes together in one venue. There were close to 500 people in that hall. I was only an usher standing outside and welcoming the guests when they arrived and left. It was my burning bush experience. The presence of God was so strong I felt unworthy but privileged to be there. Since then, there hasn’t been a conference where I have attended that impacted me so much.

We are only one click away to share the Gospel. Komuniti Digital is a beautiful platform to introduce Christianity to our East Malaysian or Indonesian friends. It is always comforting to know that our job is only to sow the seed. Only God can make it grow in their hearts. No amount of brainwashing can make us convert another person unless the conviction comes from the Holy Spirit alone. In a way this is a relief for me. This allows me to be a blessing to the community with no strings attached. You can do the work of God freely.

I also had the privilege to attend the first Komuniti Digital conference. Again, the presence of God was strong. I might be sounding like Yoda saying “The force is strong“ but it was. I really cannot explain it. Jubilee Ministry was a starting point.  Now, Komuniti Digital has allowed us to reach far and beyond what our minds can imagine. I pray that each of us will play our part in this beautiful initiative.
