Sermon Reflection: Growing Deeper in Friendship Discipleship

Contributed by Abbey Thangiah • Dec 3, 2024

What are you MAKE-ing out of your life?

I have been a Christian since I was born but accepted Him as my Saviour during my confirmation at 12 and again as a teenager at 14. One of the earliest things I remember “walking in the Spirit” was burning my RM 100 Dungeons and Dragons books. Since then Walking with Him has been a journey.

Making Christ known

I remember trying to tell Christ to my classmates. Since I was in ACS Secondary school in Sitiawan, it made making Christ known easier because the teachers were my Youth Fellowship counsellors as well. I also remember doing morning devotion in class and my classmates would ask me what I am reading. I will then show them the Our Daily Bread devotionals. I wasn’t the best example but I think as a growing teenager, I tried my best.

Admonishing

I would like to appreciate all my Sunday School teachers and Youth Fellowship Counsellors for their guidance. I wasn’t well behaved as a kid and not the greatest teenager around. Looking back 30 years, I appreciate all the sacrifices and annoyances they have had with me. Without their guidance, I wouldn’t be the Christian I am today. Not forgetting all the Cell Leaders in DUMC too. I would like to thank my Cell Leaders since I joined DUMC – Dr Ong Sea Hing, Janan Ho, Ho J Son, Roland Shau and Sharon Tan Li Li. May God continue to bless all of you in all that you do. My cell leaders have been around since I failed uni and also lost my job during the pandemic many years later. Without each and everyone of you I wouldn’t be where I am today. Do continue to ‘Tahan’ your leaders as you continue to admonish them in God’s love.

Know How

I think DUMC has the best pastors and teachers around. Regardless of your Christian level of knowledge, DUMC has a course for you to learn and grow. All teaching in DUMC is rooted in the Bible and His word. When it comes to marriages, DUMC also assigns mentors to grow with the couple during the Pre Marriage counselling. DUMC recognizes the importance of obedience. Saying “Good morning Holy Spirit” when you wake up resets your spiritual compass. It is said the first thing and last thing you say and think during the day will imprint a subconscious memory.

Example

My life has not been perfect but I know Christ has been with me every single step of the way. He has not let me go hungry or lacked anything. I know that just like how God feeds the sparrows, He will provide and I have lacked nothing. I learn from Job not to curse God nor forsake Him when I am down. I know that He will never let me go. Just like the analogy of the balloon, we must constantly fill ourselves with the Spirit and be an example for others to follow.
