The sermon this weekend is an exhortation we have heard from Senior Pastor Chris time and again that the mission field is out there, from the moment we step out of the Church door. Dr. Crane’s sharing this weekend is in the same line that we are to believe that we are placed where we are in this season because it is part of His plan. The image that came to mind is a dandelion plant. The dandelion does not know how it came to be in that place, the wind brought it there. If the conditions were good enough, a new dandelion plant grows and in time produces its own flowers, which (hopefully) turns into heads full of fluffy seeds waiting to be carried by the wind and be planted only God knows where.
We too are like dandelion plants in our neighbourhoods. I say neighbours in plural because we are not confined to a single neighbourhood. Who are our neighbours? They are the people around our place of residence. They are our colleagues from work. They are acquaintances from the various interest groups we have around us, be it from gym, sports, reading clubs, board and video games, etc. Each time we interact, seeds could be blown off to influence and grow in someone else’s life.
The question is: what will your dandelion seed contain as the seed you have at that moment flies away? Will it carry negative things like bitterness, anger, or gossip? Or perhaps something more positive and Christlike, like hope, kindness, and goodwill? While it is impossible for us to always maintain Christlikeness all the time because we are still in the flesh and are prone to sin, we should be mindful that we are representative of Christ’s Kingdom on earth and try to be Christlike in all of our ways, and not act however we please most of the time.
I pray that we will each continue to strive to understand His heart and purpose for us where we are placed in this season. May we continue to learn and understand who our God is and work towards the betterment of those around us, showing that we are who we say we follow in thought, word and deed until the day the veil of death parts for us. And I pray that the words we hear would be “Well done, you good and faithful servant!” and not “I never knew you; depart from Me”.
Dandelion me
Full white heads of fluff and seeds, filled with things from deep within
Are my seeds filled with Joy and Life? Do they bring the Shalom of Christ?
Am I not welcomed wherever I go? Do my neighbours see a pesky weed?
Oh Lord, I pray let that not be it! I pray to be more, yes indeed!
Lord let me be welcomed, though I am just a weed.
Vibrant flowers, verdant leaves, seeds of Love may I yield.
Dandelion me, how I wish I can be, something useful where You place me,
Help me be just where I’m meant to be, Your will be done, Amen and Amen.
