Sermon Reflection: When God Chooses You for a Task

Contributed by Michelle Chuah • Aug 29, 2023

Thank You for Your Presence, Lord! Oh, how often I have turned to You in times of challenges during my days at work.

Today’s topic of ‘God choosing me for a task’ has happened many times in my life and I truly can relate to Saul in my initial response of disbelief, denial and even distancing myself, when called to a task that someone else does not want to do which has landed in my hands!

Yet, when faced especially with a task that I had never been trained in nor have any experience in, my late mentor, a female pastor named Magdalene Lim had always reminded me that if God brings you to it, He will surely see you through it. Amen to that indeed.

I recall the final task which was given to me six months prior to my retirement as a primary school teacher, I was sent for a three-day crash course on how to handle children with learning disabilities, like Asperger’s Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Dyslexia. Wow! Looks like an impossible task for a teacher with no experience at all in teaching such special children;  yet as I intentionally trusted Him to see me through the last six months of my career, I prayed that I would do my best and finish the task as best as I could, in order to glorify Him.

Did I finish the task God gave me? Up to the day of retirement, I did my best as the Lord led me to glorify Him by showing love, patience and understanding to these children. On Teacher’s Day, a child with Asperger Syndrome gave me a plaque with these words ‘Happy Teacher’s Day Puan Chuah. You are the wind beneath our wings’.  Another set of twin girls decided to dress up and accompany me during my retirement ceremony. These were truly touching gestures! I hope I have made a difference in these precious children’s lives, inspiring them with love and hope. I am reminded of God’s love and being an ambassador for Christ, when Pastor Benny quoted Ephesian 2:10: For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

So when we are given a task by God, He will see us through it from the beginning to the end. We do not need to reinvent the wheel, just follow His Will for He has empowered us through the Holy Spirit. Just like Elijah and Enoch who had obeyed God and finished well in their tasks, I pray that all of us will aim to finish well, in achieving God’s greater purposes and to glorify Him above all else.
