This week’s model of bold prayer by King Jehoshaphat, built on a rhythm of “Are You Not? Did You Not? Will You Not?” struck a chord with me. It coincided with a new routine I have recently started – weekly journaling with my second son to support his Bible studies and to improve his reading in the process.
As we moved through the lives of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in Genesis, I found myself explaining how God’s promises remained unbroken across generations. From the first call of Abraham to the renewal of the covenant with Jacob at Bethel, I rediscovered who God is: He is faithful, for His Words doesn’t change even generations later. He is Merciful, for there was nothing Abraham did to merit “abounding blessings”. He is gracious, for He promised “the older will serve the younger” while Jacob and Esau were still yet unborn and had not done anything right or wrong. Above all, He is loving and compassionate.
I realized all over again that God is gracious because of who He is, not because of what we do. He blesses us simply because we are His, anchored in the finished work of Jesus.
Lord, as I lead my boy to know You – the God of the Bible – and to learn to trust You, ignite in my heart the desire to relish in Your daily presence daily. Tutor my heart towards a posture of surrender. I lift up everything that seeks to pull me away from the joy and hope I have in You. This I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
