Coming from a pre-believer background, life has been full of ‘what if’s and fear of the future growing up in a family worrying about financial lack. Prayers seemed unanswered until a Christian colleague showed care and concern when I was on my own, away from home. Yet Christ was not real enough until I was facing problems and someone gave me a Gideons New Testament Bible which I began reading when I felt lost, sad and worried. God opened the door for me as my good sister-in-Christ and also my future Mother-in-law had been praying for me.
Life was not that easy after marriage but I had never lacked anything as He had always provided. During that time, my younger sister had received a JPA scholarship and was sent to study in England. I truly praise God for her good opportunity coming from a family who could not afford to send any of us for further education. While she was away, I had constantly prayed for God to send people to care for her. I used to send letters to encourage her and prayed for her well being, even healing when she’s down with a bad bout of flu due to the cold weather. One day, I was so surprised when she wrote to say that she looks forward to my letters of encouragement and positive thoughts and complain of negative letters from home. God had also sent a believer landlady and a distant Christian aunt who showed her the love of God while she was studying there. Distance does not matter when we pray as God is omnipresent. Later when she came back she had not accepted Christ although she believed as there were strong objections from my mother and married a pre-believer.
My husband gave her a bible and we continued to pray for her salvation. We kept in touch whenever possible. One day after ten years had passed, she invited us for her baptism in KL Wesley church. Praise the Lord for answering our persistent prayer for her. Though we had only sown into her life, God brought another Christian to care and brought her into His Kingdom. We continue to sow into other people’s lives when the opportunities arise but some have also fallen on hard ground. We pray that God will send someone else to soften the ground for the seed of salvation to grow.
Still we try our best to be Christlike especially among neighbours who cause conflicts and challenges over small issues like parking! Praise the Lord! He keeps us on our toes when such issues arise. We then are reminded to pray daily for our neighbourhood and our nation too.
