DUMC STORIES: DEBBIE LAI

Sent by Debbie Lai • June 18, 2023

Every Tuesday morning, our staff team at DUMC gathers for staff devotion. One day, I was informed that I would be sharing during one of the sessions. Nervousness washed over me as I pondered over what I should share that would benefit everyone. So, I turned to God in prayer, seeking His guidance.

For some reason, on the last two Monday mornings before the devotion, my mind kept dwelling on the moments when I attended The Marriage Course (TMC) back in 2017. It was a significant memory that reminded me of how I became a Christian and how God saved my life, my marriage, and my family.

My journey with my husband, Victor, began when we were both 23 years old. We got married when we turned 31, and the following year, our daughter was born. Now she’s 12 years old, and you can probably guess my age from that.

2017 was a tough year, a year that neither Victor nor I had anticipated. It was a year that almost led us to divorce. The decision to end the marriage was mine, not his. Our daughter was only 6 years old at the time, and my anger and frustration consumed me. I refused to speak to Victor, communicate with him, or even acknowledge his presence. I shut him out completely.

But in that dark time, God sent His servant into our lives, the husband of our cell group leader. He shared the gospel with us and convinced me to attend The Marriage Course (TMC).

I remember sitting across from my husband in Hall 3 during the course, unable to even sit together. If you were part of the organising committee and witnessed our situation, you would have thought there was nothing that could be done. But God, in His infinite power, can do what humans cannot. (Amen!)

Though we initially resisted, we had numerous opportunities to discuss and communicate during the classes. I am eternally grateful to God and the TMC committee who fervently prayed for us and our marriage.

After graduating from TMC in 2017, our marriage began to improve, albeit gradually. It took time for us to heal, and we truly needed God’s help to mend what was broken. In 2018, we joined the TMC organising committee and have been actively involved since then.

Today, we stand as a testament to God’s faithfulness. We are stronger than ever and honoured to be part of the DUMC team. We never could have imagined that this transformation could happen to us. Never… We have a God who makes the impossible possible.

In our six years of service in TMC, we have encountered at least one or two couples each year who were on the brink of divorce, just like us. And by the grace of God, their marriages were also restored. Witnessing these miracles has been incredibly encouraging for Victor and myself, and it is one of the reasons we remain committed to serving in TMC.

As I shared this story with my colleagues during staff devotion, my heart overflowed with gratitude and awe for what God had done in our lives. All glory and honour belong to Him, the One who repairs and restores. May God bless you and guide you too in every relationship.
