DUMC STORIES: JANET LAI

Sent by Janet Lai • Apr 3, 2023

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:33-34

This verse has had a great impact on my life. It was repeated to me over and over again, but it wasn’t until I met a pastor from a healing ministry in 2018 that I really began to understand its meaning and how it could apply to my life.

This pastor also taught me about God’s kingdom and the abundant life, as stated in John 10:10, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” And in Romans 14:17, “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit”.

After gaining this understanding, I began to explore what an abundant life would look like in God’s kingdom. This led me to learn how to fully surrender to Him and it gave me great peace. With that, I was able to focus on what He is calling me to do and to grow closer to Him daily.

I would like to share a few incidents that showed how God provided for us in unique ways. My spouse and I got married in June 2022 and we had an intimate wedding dinner that could only accommodate around 130 guests. Unexpectedly, we received so much monetary blessings from people who were absent through zoom, which fully covered our wedding costs, including the photographer and videographers for our wedding day, accommodation, and also, a starting fund for building our married life.

A few weeks after our wedding, our washing machine broke down after only two uses (maybe because it was a used machine), and we decided to get a new one for long-term use. We didn’t tell anyone about this, but a few days later, we received an envelope from a friend who wanted to bless us during our wedding but was unable to attend because of COVID. The envelope contained the exact cost of the washing machine we had bought.

I lost my full-time job after the first MCO, and my phone’s motherboard was damaged. Fixing it would cost more than getting a new one. Since I was not working, I thought I would be fine without a phone as it was still functional for calling. However, last year, I received a new phone as a Christmas gift from a friend.

I started a small online fitness business, and a few months ago, a small group of clients requested a full refund for their remaining unused sessions. Regardless of the situation, I proceeded with a full return to them, doing what was right in God’s eyes. A week later, a new client appeared out of nowhere and signed up for a month’s package with my services, paying triple the amount I had refunded. It was also the exact amount I needed to pay for an international examination fee.

My spouse, like many others, considered taking on additional side jobs to make ends meet. It took him weeks to decide if he should proceed with it as this would mean lesser time with love ones and his passions. After clearing his mind and focusing on God, he experience a peace that surpases understanding and was really assured of God’s providence. He then had the confidence to just trust God and not take on any of those extra side jobs. Ever since then, he has been able to pay off all his monthly commitments in full consistently.

Praise God for being a God that provides!
