DUMC STORIES: KAREN MURUGESU

Good morning, everyone. I’d like to share a testimony of God’s goodness in my life. Last year was a deeply challenging time for my family and me. On September 13, 2023, my brother passed away suddenly, leaving us in unbearable grief. Just two weeks later, something unexpected happened that tested us even further.

While preparing coffee for my husband at home, I fainted. In that moment, I genuinely thought my time had come, and I would be with the Lord. But God had a different plan for me. When I fainted, I could still hear my house filled with screams and tears. After a while, I managed to regain consciousness and was taken to the HKL emergency ward.

I was surrounded by a few doctors, and each of them asked me the same questions. I wished I had CCTV in my home so that I could relive the scenario whenever the doctor approached me. After a thorough examination, the doctor advised that they needed immediate surgery because the baby’s heart rate was decreasing, which was dangerous for both of us. My blood pressure was not returning to normal and was not responding to medication either.

My entire family was praying outside of HKL, while Kanthan’s family was praying in Sri Lanka. Our friends, church members, and colleagues were upholding us in prayer. The doctor indicated that they could only perform the procedure if my blood pressure was normal. My better half began telling me a series of jokes to make me laugh and restore my blood pressure to normal levels. Praise God, after one hour, my blood pressure returned to normal, and I was sent to the operating theatre. Our princess, Katrina, was born at 6:20 pm on 28th September 2023.

Her arrival is a miracle for us because of the complications I experienced during my pregnancy. I frequently received unfavourable comments from the doctor after each check-up. But I thank God for my hubby; while I disagree with his belief that “all will be taken care of,” it is mostly accurate in our lives.

Katrina’s birth brought comfort not only to us but to the entire family. I really believe that her birth has helped us move forward. Despite having many doubts and living in confusion, we have never run out of God’s goodness to this day. I believe God is in control of our lives, not just in good times but also in bad. As we see in Genesis 24:67, Rebekah comforted Isaac after his mother died, and in Ruth, Naomi’s grandson’s birth brought hope, joy, and comfort into her life.

I would like to encourage all of us, regardless of the situation we are in right now. God sees, cares, and is in control. He will bring the right people into our lives to assist us in seeing things beyond, moving on, overcoming, comforting, encouraging, and lifting us up for His glory. I really want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been a part of our journey. Many brothers and sisters in Christ encouraged us and helped us in many ways. A special thanks to Bro Kong, who always supported us and was considerate of our situation when Kanthan was working under him, and also to Pr Kelvin and Sis Sarah.

Finally, let us constantly remember this verse from Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Amen.
