Our Best Thought

When God’s Plan Seems Impossible (Genesis 17)

Jan 18, 2025

The 2025 edition of Our Best Thought is inspired by our 2025 Bible Reading Plan and features writings thoughtfully crafted by contributors reflecting on their daily devotions. Our Best Thought is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.”

Reading: Genesis 17:15-18:21

Scripture:

Genesis 17:15-17

15 God also said to Abraham, ‘As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.’

17 Abraham fell face down; he laughed and said to himself, ‘Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?’

Observation:

In Genesis 17, God shares His plan for Abraham and Sarah, a plan that seems ridiculous in the eyes of man. How can a hundred-year-old man and a ninety-year-old woman conceive? Abraham had this very question in mind. He viewed this plan from a human perspective, and thought that having a child with Sarah at that age was logically impossible. But God’s plans come from a position of divine authority, and His perspective is beyond human comprehension. This makes God’s plans all the more extraordinary, as they are made to fulfill His divine purposes.

Application:

Sometimes, God may reveal His plans for us and we may think “What? No way that can happen.” Like Abraham, we tend to perceive things from a human perspective, leading us to doubt His plans at times as we have limited understanding of the big picture. Let us remember that our God is an extraordinary God, all-powerful, all-knowing and forever loving, and that this God, through His divine power, empowers us to live extraordinary lives for His glory!

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, forgive us for doubting Your plans when we do not understand them. Your divine perspective is one that we cannot comprehend, and only You can make the impossible possible. Even though it may not make sense to us, help us trust Your extraordinary plans for us and carry out Your will in our lives for the glory of Your name. Amen.
