The 2024 edition of Our Best Thought is inspired by our 2024 Bible Reading Plan and features writings thoughtfully crafted by contributors reflecting on their daily devotions. “Our Best Thought“ is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.”
Reading: Genesis 8:1-9:17
Scripture:
Genesis 9:16-17
16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
ㅤ
Observation:
Genesis 6–9 details the story of Noah’s Ark, where God commanded Noah to build an ark to save his family and a pair of every animal from a flood sent as judgment on humanity’s wickedness. In Genesis 9, God establishes a covenant with Noah and all living creatures, promising never again to destroy the Earth with a flood. As a sign of this everlasting covenant, God set the rainbow in the sky as a reminder of His mercy, faithfulness, and commitment to His creation. This covenant is not just for Noah but for all generations to come, a symbol of God’s unchanging promise to His people.
ㅤ
Application:
God’s covenant with Noah is a powerful reminder of His steadfast nature and enduring promises. In a world filled with uncertainty and change, the rainbow signifies that God’s word is unbreakable. He is a God who keeps His promises throughout all generations. This covenant assures us of His faithfulness and His deep care for His creation. We can take comfort in knowing that the God who made this promise to Noah is the same God who walks with us today, unchanging and unwavering in His love and mercy.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your covenant with Noah and for the assurance it brings us even today. Thank You for being a God who keeps His promises and remains faithful to Your people throughout all generations. In this ever-changing world, help us to trust in Your unchanging nature and find peace in Your steadfast love, taking comfort in Your faithfulness. Amen.
