Our Best Thought

A Love Observed from Eternity Past (Psalm 136)

Oct 19, 2024

The 2024 edition of Our Best Thought is inspired by our 2024 Bible Reading Plan and features writings thoughtfully crafted by contributors reflecting on their daily devotions. Our Best Thought is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.”

Reading: Psalm 136

Scripture:

Psalm 136:23-26
23 He remembered us in our low estate
His love endures for ever.
24 and freed us from our enemies.
His love endures for ever.
25 He gives food to every creature.
His love endures for ever.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures for ever.

Observation:

Every action of the Lord, every work He has done, is rooted in His love—a love that has endured from the past to the present. When He created the universe, He did it in His love. When He delivered His chosen people, it was out of love. When He met people’s needs, whether providing food or deliverance from enemies, He did so in love.

We stand secure not only because He loves us, but because love is the very foundation of who He is.

Application:

In light of this understanding of our great God of love, we can consider responding in a few ways. First, we can choose to bow in worship, acknowledging Him as the source of perfect love. Recognizing His love can inspire a posture of reverence and gratitude, reminding us of His deep care and faithfulness.

Additionally, we can strive to make decisions that are rooted in love. By allowing His love to shape our words and actions, we align ourselves with His nature and reflect His character in our daily lives. As we base our choices on love, we become vessels of His love to others, embodying the same compassion and kindness He has shown us.

Prayer:

Lord, as You continue to reveal Your love to us, give us the grace to be rooted and established in love as You are. May all our decisions, words, and actions flow from that foundation of love. Amen.
