Our Best Thought

Rock of Refuge (Psalm 71)

Nov 15, 2024

The 2024 edition of Our Best Thought is inspired by our 2024 Bible Reading Plan and features writings thoughtfully crafted by contributors reflecting on their daily devotions. Our Best Thought is taken from the hymn, “Be Thou My Vision” as a reference to God: “Thou my best thought, by day or by night.”

Reading: Psalm 71

Scripture:

Psalm 71:3-5

Be my rock of refuge,
    to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.
Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel.

For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord,
    my confidence since my youth.

Observation:

Psalm 71 shows a life that trusts in God through difficult times. The psalmist talks about God being the one who delivers and rescues. He is the one who hears our cry, our rock of refuge, and our fortress. God is also our hope and redeemer, offering righteous help when we need it.

The psalmist responds by taking refuge in God, constantly praising Him and putting his hope in Him. He shares God’s righteous acts with others and passes on His greatness to the next generation. Through it all, he remains devoted, trusting and praising God.

Application:

Like the psalmist, we face hard times in life. Psalm 71 reminds us that God is always with us—our rock, our fortress, and our deliverer. When we feel afraid or unsure, we can turn to God and cry out for help. We need to make God a regular part of our lives, remembering His faithfulness from the very beginning. Instead of focusing on our problems, we are encouraged to praise God and speak of His goodness to others. Sharing what God has done for us helps others see His power and love. Whether it’s through words, music, or actions, we are called to praise Him and put our trust in Him.

Prayer:

O Lord, help us to stay faithful because You are faithful. You are with us through the good times and the hard times. Thank You for being our constant. Give us strength to overcome challenges, and help us share Your goodness and Your righteous acts with the next generation. Amen.
